Digital Texts in and Out of School

Introduction:

"They question what capabilities and understandings the latest generation of recruits from bringing their own personal encounters with digital cultures to their development and training as teachers, and how it is possible for the territory of curriculum development to engage with digital cultures."

This quote popped out at me in the introduction because I am a teacher and I feel that it is so important to know how to use technology and know what your students are using technology for. I do not think myself as a technology savvy human being. I would actually have to say that I struggle with it. I mean I know how to use the basic stuff, but when it comes to the more advance things that are becoming more popular. I struggle. That is why I think it is key that counties make teachers take so many hours of professional development. Also, not all teachers are the same, just like students. We have different experiences with technology that can be helpful to bring to a school system. I know that if I have trouble I always ask the teachers around me to help me with figuring a program or a piece of technology.

Chapter 1:

"Arguing that game players are developing different approaches to learning, Downes writes, 'computing environments, through their interactivity, readily afford these approaches and therefore reinforce this pre-disposition towards exploratory modes of learning."

I found this quote and I really liked running into it since I took a class for my class about video games, video gamers, and learning. I remember how we looked into how generations today are into video games and when they play educational games information seems to stick because they are learning and not even realizing it. They are also learning while having fun. As a teacher we should not always teach the same way. We should try to find ways to teach that excite the student like through video games. Even not really being a gamer myself, I would rather do an educational game at school than a worksheet or paper/ pencil assignment.

Chapter 2:

"I believe current classroom practices which focus mainly on individualized learning need to learn from what I and others have noted about online learning collaboration: that each individual can achieve more by interacting with others."

I have to say that it is very important to have learning where collaboration is taking place. Everyone can learn from the people around them, from young children to adults. A lot of times if we have struggling students in the classroom a teacher pairs them up with a stronger student in the class to help them learn or understand better. With adults I know a lot of the time we go to one another if we are having issues with technology or how to handle a situation or event that is occurring. It I just good to have people to bounce ideas off of because they may have better solutions that you really haven't thought of.

Chapter 3:

" The creation of a child's profile page can be viewed as a form of text production that occurs beyond these institutions, and that differs from curriculum- directed text production."

Many young people have their own social media pages such as Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat etc.... The list really can go on and on. It is a way to socialize and have something that truly is like an online scrapbook. Some things are very positive about social media, but it also has its negatives. A lot of the time I feel that I see more and more younger people on social medias that really do not meet the age requirement and then they see inappropriate or are engaging in inappropriate behavior. Some parents can not see this because they can set their profiles to private or have a password. We just need to as parents be aware that our children should not have social media sites until they are old enough or they know what they should or should not do.

Below is my Illuminated Text. I decided to focus on video gaming and learning. I felt that chapter 2 really stood out for me and since I have had a masters class that focused on this topic I feel really strongly about it.
